Survey reveals who owns guns in California—and how many got them without background checks

There are 4.2 million people that have guns in California—and that is just those that are registered.  There is no estimate on the number of guns held by MS-13, the Crips, the Bloods and your run of the mill gangsters and criminals.  The gun holders include Senators Feinstein and Harris—who both want to take away YOUR guns.

“The researchers found that gun ownership in California is far below national levels: 14 percent here, compared with 22 percent nationally. Gun owners here were also demographically older, whiter and more politically conservative than the rest of the state.

Forty-three percent of the state’s gun owners are 60 and older, and 33 percent are 45 to 59, the researchers determined. Nearly two-thirds are white, 20 percent are Latino, and 68 percent have not completed college. There’s also a partisan divide: 38 percent of gun owners are Republicans, 28 percent are Democrats and 27 had no party preference.”

Wow, we are far BELOW the national average in legal gun owners.  My belief is that many have guns and refuse to report them to government.  Maybe because they—on the Left and Right—do not trust government to be honest.

A new survey reveals who owns guns in California—and how many got them without background checks

A new UC Davis survey finds California gun owners are older, whiter and more likely to be Republican than the state overall.

In a state that has some of the nation’s toughest gun control laws, one in four California gun owners own firearms that they somehow managed to buy without undergoing background checks, researchers at UC Davis’ Violence Prevention Research Program reported Sunday.

An estimated 4.2 million California adults own guns, 14 percent of the population. California laws dating back decades make it a crime to buy or sell a gun without requiring the purchaser to submit to background checks.

The checks, conducted via state and federal law enforcement databases, are intended to block people from owning guns if they have a criminal history, have committed acts of domestic violence, or have a history of mental illness.

Researchers Nicole Kravitz-Wirtz and Dr. Garen Wintemute are not sure how gun owners came to get their guns without undergoing the legally required vetting but said they would delve further into the issue.

So will legislators.

“That’s mind-blowing,” Democratic Assemblyman Kevin McCarty, who has carried several gun control measures, said when told of the finding. “We pride ourselves on being the most conscientious state in the nation as far as gun safety laws.”

Californians have been known to buy firearms in Nevada, Arizona and other states that have lax background check laws. Whether such purchases would account for the large numbers of purchases carried out without a check was not clear from the survey.

McCarty vowed to investigate how background checks are being evaded and push to close the loopholes. “One person slipping through the cracks is one too many,” he said.

Aimed at better understanding who in California owns guns—and at better addressing firearm misuse, a high profile and lethal public health issue—the web-based study of 2,500 adults was conducted by the California Safety and Wellbeing Survey for the state-funded UC Firearm Violence Research Center.

Wintemute and Kravitz-Wirtz presented their findings Sunday at a gathering of the American Public Health Association in San Diego, but the paper also coincides with the aftermath of a mass shooting on Wednesday that left 12 people dead at a bar in Ventura County. In that case, the gunman, a military veteran who committed suicide at the scene and was described as having had a history of hostile and depressed behavior, had obtained his guns legally.

In 2017, California had 1,612 gun-related suicides and 1,518 gun-related homicides. Yet no comprehensive study of gun ownership in the state has been done since the 1970s.

The researchers found that gun ownership in California is far below national levels: 14 percent here, compared with 22 percent nationally.

There’s also a partisan divide: 38 percent of gun owners are Republicans, 28 percent are Democrats and 27 had no party preference.

Among the other findings:

  • 25 percent of California adults live in households with firearms.
  • 40 percent of those households have children 12 or younger.
  • 10 percent of gun owners own 10 or more guns. They account for half the firearms in California.
  • Assault rifle ownership accounts for 5 percent of firearm ownership.

Most of the respondents said they owned handguns for personal protection. Only 19 percent of long gun owners used their weapons for hunting.

  1. I wonder if it ever occurred to the morons who put this “study” together that a lot of the evil unregistered firearms in CA were possibly inherited or brought in to California by folks who migrated there from another state where registration is not required. And old white men own most of these guns? Whatta shock. Bet you’ll never hear about it when one of these old felons saves his life or that of another with one of these unlicensed guns.

4.2 million is WAY under the real number.. That doesn’t include guns that have been in families and guns bought without the state getting involved. I bet it’s closer to 10 million +_.. They have no real way of knowing this except for sales that went through the government system..

  3. “Californians have been known to buy firearms in Nevada, Arizona and other states that have lax background check laws.” This is an outright lie as far as Arizona is concerned and I suspect it is a lie regarding Nevada. I’m sure what they mean by “lax” is that there is no waiting period to take you purchase as long as you either pass the background check or are a concealed weapon permit holder. My wife and I fled California to Arizona going on two years ago with the anti gun climate being but one of many reasons to get the hell out. While still a Californian, on trips into Arizona, I went into numerous gun stores in and everyone told me they couldn’t sell a gun to someone with a California drivers license or ID. Now that I am an Arizona resident, I’ve obtained my CCW and went through a rigorous back ground check to do so. I obtained my CCW even though Arizona is a Constitutional carry state. Congress needs to pass CCW reciprocity. All states must honor my drivers and marriage licenses issued by another state. Neither of these are “rights”, but the Constitutional right to bear arms is a right, not a privilege.

  4. The TRUTH the WHOLE TRUTH and NOTHING BUT THE TRUTH—-
Adolf Hitler confiscated guns before killing over 13 million people—
JOSEPH STALIN confiscated guns before killing over 20 million People—-
MAO ZEDONG confiscated guns before killing 45 MILLION PEOPLE—
Pol Pot confiscated guns just before killing over 2 million people—
GET THE PICTURE ? WAKE THE FK UP !!!!!!

  5. Another MYTH by Democrats down the drain.

Why would you or anyone vote Democrat.

    • Boris Badenov says

How many respondents, responded with F-OFF? I agree with John S. Just looking at the NICS for the wonderful Marxist years of Barry Sotoro that number is way friggin’ LOW.

  6. The dem’s ignore the true nut of their own survey, which is the criminal
element in the state population. They instead wrap their “findings”
in the phony demographics of race, age and political leanings. This smoke
screen is to hide the real objective of total gun removal. This will turn out
like all modern day democrat plans…a fools errand.
