Sheriffs Condemn Gavin Newson’s Gun Control Efforts

Gavin newsomRiverside County Sheriff Stan Sniff and San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon are criticizing Gavin Newsom’s current gun control push as a misdirected effort that restricts law-abiding citizens and the Second Amendment, rather than criminals.

Sheriff McMahon, in particular, suggests that Newsom’s push exemplifies the habit of enacting more and more gun controls when there has been no effort to enforce the laws that are already on the books. McMahon said, “We still have people running around with guns that aren’t supposed to have them.”

According to the Press-Enterprise, McMahon sees Newsom’s push as just another way to restrict law-abiding citizens’ rights. And that — in addition to the lack of enforcement — is why he opposes it: “I generally oppose any legislation that puts any more restrictions or control on citizens having an ability to possess firearms,” Sheriff McMahon is reported to have said.

Sheriff Sniff reportedly expressed the same sentiments, but went even further by suggesting the added restrictions on law-abiding citizens harm public safety. According to the Press-Enterprise, he said, “In some cases, these proposed bills actually make our communities less safe, and remove inherent rights of our citizens to self-defense, or worse, allow only the wealthy, elite or the well-off to protect themselves.”

Newsom responded to the sheriffs’ concerns by suggesting Sniff and McMahon hold “a different point of view” than the sheriffs who had been in office before them. And he suggested that Sniff and McMahon are known to oppose “law after law after law.” Newsom added, “I think these things save lives. They can disagree … but the data does not support their point of view.”

If passed, Newsom’s gun control ballot initiative will enact a statewide “high capacity” magazine ban and put ammunition background checks in place.

It is interesting to note that in one of the most high profile attacks in recent memory — the May 2014 Santa Barbara attack, in which three innocents were gunned down, after others were stabbed — the gunman only used 10-round magazines. Newsom argues that limiting citizens to 10-round magazines is a way to reduce crime.

  1. Newsom must have internal polling that shows that many in his purported “base” have no idea who he is or what he stands for. Otherwise, why climb upon a horse that has been discredited so many times at the polls in CA, and by current events, if not for “name recognition”?
And all in pursuit of a goal (the governorship in 2018) that may even be beyond his reach.

    Newsom is wrong!
Newsom is a coddled, body guard protected politician.
    And all at taxpayers expense.
And he is wrong and treasonous for influencing our Second Amendment rights to protect our selves, our families, and our property.
Newsom has only the interest of his own political self and not that of the common Citizen who pays his salary.
And, I have a first obligation to my family, self, and property and will not give up that right nor will I submit to anyone who wishes to remove or hamper that ability.
    I am RIGHT!
    Newsom is wrong!

Surprised that we don’t have conservative north state sheriffs on board, such as Shasta Co. Tom Bosenko, Modoc Co. Mike Poindexter, Lassen Co. Dean Grown, Plumas Co. Greg Hagwood, Trinity Co. Bruce Haney, and Siskiyou Co. John Lopez on board.

Are the southern Calif sheriffs coordinating their efforts with the north state sheriffs?

  4. Newsome is a typical elitist democrat protected by men and women who carry guns; when he and the rest of the idiots who are protected by other people guns are disarmed then, and maybe then, can they have the right to try to disarm law abiding citizens. The democrats in CA are turning criminals out of prison early and have allowed many refugees into this state who do not like America nor American ways and some intent on doing us harm and at the same time the democrats/socials/communists party are trying to take away the rights of the law abiding citizens to protect themselves and their families from criminals and terrorists who will always have guns. HOW STUPID IT THAT??? PEOPLE WAKE UP, the democrat party is not for freedoms and they are not your friend; they are using you to destroy our freedoms.

  5. “Riverside County Sheriff Stan Sniff and San Bernardino County Sheriff John McMahon are criticizing Gavin Newsom’s current gun control push as a misdirected effort that restricts law-abiding citizens and the Second Amendment, rather than criminals.”

Sadly, both officers incorrectly state the cause and effect of this travesty.
It is not about misguided concerns, but rather about jaded political commitments to gain needed campaign funding from Constitution-hostile interests.

Lt. Gov. Grating Nuisance takes money to willingly commit perjury of his oath of office regarding both Consitutions, by abusing the initiative law making process in California.

Why not? He knows elected politicians do not face criminal prosecution for seeking to legislate a high crime or misdemeanor, because the state government assumes his actions represent the full faith and confidence of the Peoples will, validated by an election win. The notoriety of his usurpations in office is free publicity, so it is a “win-win” for him.
Criminalize legislative seditions to direct prosecution that eliminates the impeachment discredidation (now what is the likelhood of Kamala Harris doing that on her own?), and old Nuisance will suddenly act pure as the driven snow. IMO

  6. Suggest the sheriffs refuse to enforce the laws they determine to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 2nd Amendment. They report directly to the citizens and have the authority/duty to do that.

  7. I would like to as newsom a couple of questions about his proposed laws. First what is he trying to do?? Seems to me there are only 2 possible answers. he is trying to make people safer or he wants to take away every bodies gun rights so he has better control. Giving him the benifit of the doubt and lets say he wants to make people safer. The next question is it really going to do any good? Will it have done anything to stop any shooting in the last 10 years? The answer to that is NO. So the question goes back to why are you doing this?

Kommieforniastan is on track to sell 1,000,000 firearms this year, up by about 300,000 over last year. I’ve got even odds that not all of them are going to existing firearm owners. Personally I’m going to do my best in the next month to educate as many people as I can. People that are grossly misinformed about firearms thanks to the like of fools like Newsom and de Leon.
